Sogestran Logistics Launches SoBlue, France’s First Decarbonized Containerized Inland Waterway Service

As a key player in sustainable supply chains, Sogestran Logistics, a transport commission agent and subsidiary of the Sogestran Group, is enhancing its efforts towards energy transition by launching SoBlue, a new low-carbon container transport service. SoBlue is the first inland waterway service in France to use HVO* fuel. This initiative results from several years of technical and logistical work on various diesel fuel alternatives and operates under an exceptional regime on the Le Havre-Rouen-Gennevilliers line, currently serviced by two self-propelled vessels.

The first refueling with HVO for the OURAL, a 135-meter-long self-propelled vessel capable of carrying up to 270 TEUs, took place on February 15, 2023, in Gennevilliers (92) in collaboration with Paris Terminal.

Provided by the company Altens, HVO significantly reduces CO2 emissions due to its production through the hydrotreatment of residual raw materials. This synthetic fuel reduces carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 90% compared to traditional inland waterway solutions. Since August 2022, HVO has been recognized in ADEME’s GHG database.

"This new SoBlue service meets a real demand from shipowners and shippers already engaged in the energy transition. We offer them space on our units for more eco-responsible transport. The certificate provided by Altens guarantees our customers a virtuous approach to CO2 savings. Sogestran Logistics aims to develop this service throughout 2023 and convince new stakeholders to reduce the environmental footprint of their supply chain," emphasizes Benoît Mugnier, director of Sogestran Logistics.

An additional advantage in measuring CO2 emission reductions achieved, the SoBlue offer will feature HVO with a CO2 reduction coefficient certified by ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification).

The Sogestran Group, which invests €30 million annually in renewing and expanding its fleet, has long been committed to reducing its environmental footprint. The Group benefits from the expertise of about fifteen engineers within its technical department, capable of designing future transportation solutions from A to Z.

SOGESTRAN, always on the lookout for technical decarbonization solutions for inland waterways, is completing the equipment of ZULU 06, a new construction that will be the first hydrogen-powered inland vessel in France, dedicated notably to urban logistics in the Paris region.

Inland waterway transport, a safe and efficient mode for transporting goods, offers significant environmental advantages with reduced CO2 emissions per ton transported and a substantial reduction in external costs compared to road transport (less road congestion, accidents, noise, and pollutant emissions).

HVO stands for "Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil".
